LinkedIn Recommendations - where is the Netiquette?

I’ve noticed an annoying trend over the past year regarding the social networking site LinkedIn.com. I keep receiving emails from people I used to work with that are requesting recommendations. I understand the value of recommendations, but what I fail to understand, is why people seem to ask for a recommendation without providing one first? I’ll reciprocate in 90 - 95% but If I don’t I’ll be sure not to accept the recommendation.
In the spirit of good old fashioned Netiquette I’d like to offer up:
- Do not ask for something you are not willing to do for someone else first
- Without levels of “friends” only connect with people you really know.
On that second point, at least Facebook allows you to add your “friends” into different groups and Plaxo Pulse allows you to add contacts as business, friends of family.
